In the insurance section, European-based firms dominated the awards with Allianz, Zurich and Mapfre winning three of the six categories available. Evan Greenberg, CEO of Ace, scooped the award for insurance CEO of the year.

German reinsurer Hannover Re stood out in the reinsurance category, scooping the award for best global reinsurance overall and best global reinsurance company for specialty lines.

Bermudian firms were also well represented at the event. RenaissanceRe had a strong showing, picking up awards for best reinsurance company for property and best Bermuda market company. While Patrick Thiele, CEO of PartnerRe, was named reinsurance CEO of the year.

Brian Duperreault, CEO of Marsh and McLennan, won the award for best insurance broking CEO of the year for his sterling work in turning the company around after a recent rocky past. Andrew Appel, CEO of Aon Benfield, won the reinsurance equivalent, a sign of the way he has led the firm since Aon Re and Benfield merged last year.

In the service providers category, Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank picked up awards for best investment bank and best asset manager respectively. AM Best was voted the best rating agency and RMS picked up the award for best risk modelling firm.

Individuals also received awards for outstanding merit and achievement. Hank Greenberg, chairman and CEO of CV Starr & Co, who won the award for lifetime achievement at last year’s awards, was named most influential individual of the year. And James Schiro, the retiring CEO of Zurich Financial Service Group, was given the award for lifetime achievement.

The awards are the result of an extensive poll conducted by Reactions of its readership. Over a period of months, Reactions collected responses through an online poll and telephone interviews.

The event sponsor for the awards dinner was CV Starr, and category sponsors were Dewey & LeBoeuf and Guy Carpenter.
