Interview: Tom Bolt - Lloyd’s new enforcer

The new director of underwriting performance at Lloyd’s has a big challenge to fill the shoes of his predecessor, Rolf Tolle.

Tom Bolt’s appointment as director of underwriting performance last year was met with universal approval at Lloyd’s. Like his much lauded predecessor, Rolf Tolle, the 53 year old American is both well liked and well respected in the market. His combination of insurance experience, both inside and outside the London market, and a reputation for getting things done make Bolt the great persuader in most people’s eyesWith a resumé as broad as it is long, Bolt believes his trouble shooting experience will hold him in good stead at Lloyd’s. “If my job is helping businesses to navigate problems then it helps if I’ve encountered those kinds of problems before,” he explains.As Warren Buffett’s point man in London since 1996 Bolt has simultaneously run a large run-off operation (through loss portfolio transfer transactions) at the same time as building Berkshire Hathaway’s Marlborough syndicate business.
