After getting sidetracked by the minor inconvenience of the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression, New York’s state insurance department is serious again about setting up an insurance exchange in New York city.
First proposed when Eric Dinallo was superintendent, the idea has been revisited by James Wrynn, who took over the role in August last year. David Paterson, New York’s governor, committed to the idea in a state address in January. He proposed an initiative to establish the infrastructure for an insurance exchange that would operate in a similar way to the Lloyd’s of London market in the UK. Paterson believes this will enhance New York’s status as a leading financial centre and help stimulate its economy by attracting capital and insurance premiums to New York.
